The Peale

The Peale is located at 225 Holliday Street in downtown Baltimore, between Zion Church and the Real News Network, across the street from the Abel Wolman Municipal Building. There are multiple public paid parking lots, garages, and metered parking spots within a two block radius of The Peale. For those taking public transportation, The Peale is near stops for City Hall, the War Memorial, and Farmers’ Market on the Purple, Orange, Red, Blue, Yellow CityLink lines. It is also on the free Green Charm City Circulator Route, as well as LocalLink routes 54, 56, 154, 67, 78, 80 and Express BusLink routes 105, 115, 160, 154, 164. The Peale is a short walk from the Charles Center and Shot Tower Metro Stations.

The Peale has a rich history…

The Peale first opened in 1814 as a fine arts museum. Later it became Baltimore’s first City Hall and then one of the first schools in Baltimore’s Colored School system. After years of housing many private businesses, it reopened in 1931 as The Municipal Museum of the City of Baltimore and remained open until 1997. After over a decade of vacancy, restorations began in 2019. In 2022, The Peale reopened its doors with a new mission dedicated to preserving Baltimore’s intangible cultural heritage: its stories, in the form of exhibitions, performances, talks, immersive experiences, and other creative media, and the community voices that share them.
